So after driving like a crazy person in the pouring rain, I finally got to the Better Living Centre at 5:45am ready cheer on all the riders that came out for the Ride for Heart and snap their photo! I was one of the official photographers for the event and had the pleasure of taking photos of the VIP fundraisers. I also got to hold an olympic gold medal for the first time! Canadian Olympic Gold medalist Lori-Ann Muenzer was also at the event to show her support. She actually holds Canada’s first and only Olympic Gold medal in cycling. That thing is heavy!

Even the strong winds and heavy rain couldn’t stop the dedicated participants from coming out and riding to show their support and raise funds for the Heart & Stroke Foundation yesterday. The Ride for Heart took over the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway for a few hours as riders cycled from 25km to 75km.  This was the 23rd year for the annual event and had a record 13,000 registered participants. Thousands of cyclists turned out and took on this unique challenge to help make a difference and raise funds to help save lives. People had different reasons to ride, some rode to honour a loved one, some were riding as part of a team and some people just rode for the challenge.  Whatever the reason, I congratulate them on their hard work, dedication and contribution! Congratulations to all the participants, especially Colleen Johnston for raising over $100,000 and being the event’s top fundraiser! In total, the Heart & Stroke Foundation raised over $3 million!

Some facts from the Heart & Stroke Foundation:

  • of the 13,000 participants, more than 4,000 are likely to suffer from heart disease or stroke.
  • heart disease and stroke is the leading cause of death in Canada
  • 2.2 million of us under 65 have cardiovascular disease, and childhood obesity has risen threefold since the eighties

It was great to see all the people and teams excited to go out even after they saw what it was like out there. Everyone I shot was so enthusiastic! Some were soaking wet after the race but still all smiles! Check out the photos from the event and VIP photo area!

Ahhh yes summer is upon us, patios are open, shorts are out and that ever so exciting sound that tells you summer is here – the ice cream truck. Hope everyone had a great long weekend! Weather was perfect and my pants were just loose enough for all the BBQs :) Here are a few snapshots of the happenings of my May 2-4 weekend. Filled with eating, jumping, people watching and photo taking!

I first hit up Toronto to meet up with my friend Courtney who just got her first DSLR. We went out for some awesome Korean food (of which I got too excited to eat and didn’t take one photo) and then I gave her a quick photography 101 lesson. Then we met up with my friend Lauren and the 3 of us just strolled along, taking in interesting sites and people. Too bad my parking meter ran out before I could do some more street photography.

Then on Sunday, I hit up Innisfil beach with my crazy friends Kara and Lisa and made them jump in cold water while looking ridiculous in their hoodies haha (the hoodies were for an upcoming project I’m working on). I love these guys, they’re the craziest ladies I know and I like to show it by giving them loving head pushes ;)

The rest of the long weekend was filled with lots of food and family. I went to my cousin’s place for a birthday bbq and a friendly game of backyard badminton. I would just like to note that I came in 2nd in the regional badminton tournament way back when and by the looks of my game on Sunday, there was a reason I was 2nd and not 1st. I think on Monday I spent a good 6hrs eating. Seriously, I sat there munching all day and the most exercise I did was going from backyard to frontyard then to Dairy Queen. I love summer! :)

Last weekend was soooo busy. I had 5 shoots running 4 days straight with some of them going 3hrs+. Phewww that’s a lot of shooting! I’ve been trying to find time to post on here but haven’t had a chance yet. Plus I’d like to have the image done as part of a set :) However, I like this photo so much I couldn’t wait! This was shot as part of a editorial for new fashion designer Jennifer Lau. Jennifer contacted me about doing a shoot and when I saw the clothes, I already knew where I was going to do it. I’m looking forward to seeing more work from her soon!

Check out the first photo of the set! The rest will be coming shortly! And in keeping with my photographing of celebrity look-alikes, (first I had Nolan who resembled Nicholas Brendon), here I have model Jordan who in this shot has an uncanning resemblance to Ashton Kutcher. Yes? No? Maybe? Let me know your thoughts!

I had the pleasure of meeting up with Terra and Nolan for an engagement photo session on Saturday. I went to bed Friday freaking out that it was going to be windy and rainy and had planned all these umbrella shots but when we got there, just sun and some clouds, it was perfect. We got quite lucky as it started to pour just as we finished. But now that I think about it, I almost wish it had started raining a little earlier as some rain shots would have been cool. These guys were super cute and really fun to work with. Thanks Terra & Nolan for a great shoot! And for anyone who watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, doesn’t Nolan kind of look like Xander? Just sayin’ :)

Check out some photos from Saturday!

As a photographer, I don’t really have photos of myself as I’m always the one behind the camera or being asked to take the photo, which is totally cool. However,  when I do have people taking photos of me, I have no idea how to act without being totally awkward or silly. It’s like even if I try to tell myself to stand or pose the way I would tell someone I’m shooting, it just feels… weird. Of course the only time I can feel comfortable and be natural is if I’m jumping in a photo, that never gets old.  :) My good friend Jade once told me, “Navy, you’re the most awkward person EVER.” Hahaha, it made me laugh and that’s why I love her, she always tells the truth. LOL. Anyway, I posted this just because… I like it. One of the few photos I have where I don’t look completely awkward and am grounded ;)
