Meet Momma. My parents have never really been into having their photos taken and aside from a few snap shots, I’ve never actually photographed them until a few weeks ago. So trying not to scare her, I jokingly asked my mother one day if she’d let me photograph her. While I expected a “Nooooo. Whyyyy. Noooo. Go take a picture of Cali and Gucci.” (Gucci’s the family dog :D ) I was pleasantly surprised when she happily agreed to do it. I was even more surprised at how comfortable and animated she got when she was in front of the camera. She’s so cute :) I should have known she was ready when she showed up with 4 outfit changes and made my dad do the same haha. So for that Saturday afternoon it was family photo time!

If you know my mother and our family, you’ll know that food and fam jams are what we do. I know everyone loves their mom’s cooking but I’m telling you, my mother’s cooking is ZEE BEST. When I lived at home, I’m pretty sure my friends didn’t come over to visit me, they came over for Momma Nhum’s meat sticks, egg rolls and dipping sauce. I’m not gonna lie, my cooking skills are a little lame compared to hers but I’m working on it! When my parents owned a restaurant I unfortunately spent all my time eating phở (Vietnamese noodle soup) and not watching how anything was made. Ha! Talk about awkward chubby years! Anyway, she’s a master in the kitchen and I’m pretty sure this was her first time picking up a cook book. She definitely has no idea who Betty Crocker is!

SNL Photo Series - Momma NhumPIN

Saturday Night Live, you either love it or hate it (depending on the season) but one thing’s for sure, the host and musical guest portrait are always fun to see. These bumper photos, as they’re called, have always been something I look forward to seeing each episode. Photographer Mary Ellen Matthews has been the SNL photographer since 1999 and it seems like she has a pretty sweet gig.  Some pretty badass work considering the constant tight deadline and the fact that she sometimes only has 20mins to shoot these things.

So, here is my ode to Saturday Night Live and Mary Ellen Matthews and the sweet photos that force you to sit through commercials. This is the first of the series and I’ll post more as I complete them. This is what I spend my Saturday nights working on now haha. My favourite seasons have to be between those with Will Ferrell, Cheri Oteri, Molly Shannon and the seasons with Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph.

“Bobby B made me do it! Alright!”

Here’s my hommage to the cool Saturday Night Live photos! My friend Khalil and I were just playing around in the studio when he took these shots. Then my friend Louise pointed out that the first shot looked like it could be one of those SNL bumpers so I thought I’d try it out! With a little editing, here’s what I got. Whatcha think? :) I’ve always admired the photos and commercial bumpers on Saturday Night Live. The images were always so interesting and different with each guest and more often than not, the photos were fun and quirky and shows a little more of the celebrities personalities.

There’s quite a unique process during both the photoshoot and post processing. In a recent issue of the magazine Digital Photo Pro, SNL photographer Mary Ellen Matthews did an interview where she briefly went through the process of shooting the bumpers for each show. She doesn’t have much time as she obviously needs to do them every week and moves quite quickly s, sometimes even shooting during rehearsals. I often wondered about the post processing that went into the images and what the original might have looked like so I went searching to find some before photos.

It was actually a little difficult to find original versions of the images from SNL but I did find some of Megan Fox. Here’s a before and after. (Maybe this wasn’t the best example as I am clearly no Megan Fox haha)

I can’t imagine how amazing it would be to be the official photographer for Saturday Night Live and going through that hustle and bustle every week. I just love her work! Her creativity and style made the in-between commercial break time a little more bearable for me. Even if the show was bad, at least the guests had a snazzy photo to briefly distract the viewers from the lack of humour. Check out more of Mary Ellen Matthews amazing work at Jed Root Inc.!
