On Monday Devon and I took a road trip up north for a little camping adventure. We went up to Tobermory and checked out Fathom Five National Marine Park and Flowerpot Island. It always amazes me when I see places like these and then realize I’m still in Ontario. The landscape was spectacular and the water was crystal clear! And as much as I dislike stuff like guided tours (I’d rather go off discovering on my own), the glass bottom boat tour to Flowerpot Island was well worth the $40. Blue Heron Cruises offers a few different options to get to the island. Along the way there, they also showed us some interesting sites including Big Tub Lighthouse and two shipwrecks. Departing at 9:30am, we only had to share the boat with one other couple. Pretty awesome to have all that room to move around the boat for photos :) And the water is so clear that you could get a good view of the wrecks from anywhere on the top deck of the boat. With the cruise, you have the option of disembarking at Flowerpot Island or just going along for the ride. We stayed for a few hours to do some hiking and check out the place. You can also camp on the island but due to a recent bear sighting, camping was prohibited at the time.

The island itself is pretty small so it doesn’t take very long to complete the trail. Along the hiking trails you can check out the lush green interior of the island, the lighthouse, a cave and the unique rock formations found along the shore. I’m pretty sure I took over 30 photos of rocks. I think my friend Candace, a geologist, would love this place haha. The sign said 1-2 hours to walk one of the trails but of course it took us almost twice as long with all the stopping and photo taking hahah. It really was quite a fascinating place to visit and explore!  I loved it! I wish we had more time as it would have been great to hang out on the beach and go for a swim.

After a day of hiking and sadly some of the most working out I’ve done in a while, we headed back to the mainland and then camped out at Cyprus Lake, a camp site about 15mins from Tobermory. I love camping but unfortunately mosquitoes also love me. Thank goodness for Off! It keeps the bugs away AND I smell like a tropical breeze! So aside from the howling winds, creepy crawlies and scenes from the Blair Witch Project haunting my over active imagination, camping was great! LOL. Overall a great trip and I would love to go back to that area again.

If you’re looking for something active and outdoorsy to do this summer, I definitely recommend checking out these places. Cute town, amazing landscapes, beautiful sunsets and fun activities make it a great little place for an adventure! For more info on any of the places I mentioned above, check out the links below, some good stuff there! (And no, they’re not paying me for this plug, I just thought it was real purrty there :) ) Flowerpot Island rocks!
