A shot of my beautiful and long time friend Shannon from our maternity session today. It’s amazing to think that we’ve been friends for nearly 20 years and we still laugh so hard at the dumbest things. Then she turns red and I laugh even harder  :D No matter how long we go without seeing each other, when we do it’s like nothing has changed. I’m looking forward to our Stars and Strollers date with little Balboa (not the baby’s actual name lol).

I recently learned that my 5 year old niece Cali (she’s FIVE ALREADY?!) has been trying to win a trip to Disney World through the Breakfast Television “Share Your Disney Side” contest for the past few weeks.  To win, people have to submit photos with different themes showing their Disney side. Of course I wanted to help out so I decide we would throw a little twist on the classic Disney character Snow White for that week’s theme of “Classic Disney.” Before you get excited, unfortunately Cali didn’t win anything :( and we’re all still stuck here in the cold. Womp womp.

Even though she didn’t win, we did have a lot of fun playing dress up, eating candy apples and being silly. There were a few moments of mid-day, no nap time, 5 year old crankiness though haha. Man photographing kids is tough! But nothing gets them going like a little bit of sugar :D  Hopefully she’ll get a chance to experience Disney World one day! Here’s the final photo!

A poisonous apple from some creepy old lady? Ain’t nobody got time for that!

Presenting…..Snow White and the Magic Candy Apple!

And finally, Cali being silly and hanging out with her beautiful momma!

Meet Momma. My parents have never really been into having their photos taken and aside from a few snap shots, I’ve never actually photographed them until a few weeks ago. So trying not to scare her, I jokingly asked my mother one day if she’d let me photograph her. While I expected a “Nooooo. Whyyyy. Noooo. Go take a picture of Cali and Gucci.” (Gucci’s the family dog :D ) I was pleasantly surprised when she happily agreed to do it. I was even more surprised at how comfortable and animated she got when she was in front of the camera. She’s so cute :) I should have known she was ready when she showed up with 4 outfit changes and made my dad do the same haha. So for that Saturday afternoon it was family photo time!

If you know my mother and our family, you’ll know that food and fam jams are what we do. I know everyone loves their mom’s cooking but I’m telling you, my mother’s cooking is ZEE BEST. When I lived at home, I’m pretty sure my friends didn’t come over to visit me, they came over for Momma Nhum’s meat sticks, egg rolls and dipping sauce. I’m not gonna lie, my cooking skills are a little lame compared to hers but I’m working on it! When my parents owned a restaurant I unfortunately spent all my time eating phở (Vietnamese noodle soup) and not watching how anything was made. Ha! Talk about awkward chubby years! Anyway, she’s a master in the kitchen and I’m pretty sure this was her first time picking up a cook book. She definitely has no idea who Betty Crocker is!

SNL Photo Series - Momma NhumPIN

Saturday Night Live, you either love it or hate it (depending on the season) but one thing’s for sure, the host and musical guest portrait are always fun to see. These bumper photos, as they’re called, have always been something I look forward to seeing each episode. Photographer Mary Ellen Matthews has been the SNL photographer since 1999 and it seems like she has a pretty sweet gig.  Some pretty badass work considering the constant tight deadline and the fact that she sometimes only has 20mins to shoot these things.

So, here is my ode to Saturday Night Live and Mary Ellen Matthews and the sweet photos that force you to sit through commercials. This is the first of the series and I’ll post more as I complete them. This is what I spend my Saturday nights working on now haha. My favourite seasons have to be between those with Will Ferrell, Cheri Oteri, Molly Shannon and the seasons with Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph.

“Bobby B made me do it! Alright!”

Navy Nhum - Saturday Night Lounge SeriesPIN

I’ve unofficially decided that I’m going to do a photo series this summer of some friends shot on film and no I don’t mean movie film. I mean regular ol’ picture film, you know the kind you shoot with your senses and not a screen, that stuff you’re always anxious to get back from the lab because you have no idea what kind of photos you took. Yeah that stuff. I extra like film.

I’m not going to lie, I have no direction or ideas of what I actually want to do with this other than capture a few frames of some good friends.  I always feel like I never have enough time to see certain people because as we all know, life gets busy, we’re busy, people are busy but heck, I want to hang out with you damn it! If I also get to capture a few frames of your lovely face then bonus!  If not then you can still use the photo of your cat as your Facebook profile photo, no one will judge. So if we haven’t hung out in a while or if you just want to eat sushi or Korean food with me, leave me a message!

Anyway, here’s my friend Erin, her backyard and some school in her neighbourhood. She’s hilarious and an amazing hip hop dancer. And she loves sushi – automatic friends there :)
