“What is art? Are we art? Is art art?” A classic line from one of my favourite shows. Ok it’s not really a classic line but I do really love Saved by the Bell. For all those not so down with the Bell, Lisa Turtle once said this as she pretended to be a brainiac and into art to impress a boy at the Max, who she didn’t end up liking anyway. Don’t be alarmed, this post isn’t about Saved by the Bell, although I could and would love to do a whole post about the awesomeness of that show and the impact it had on my generation. You may not be able to quote it but I bet you or someone you know, knows who Screech is.
Rather this is about the questioning of ‘art’ or maybe what ‘good art’ is. Obviously this topic and the subject in question is highly debatable and subjective. But what I’ve always wondered was why one blob of paint was worth so much more than another or considered ‘better’? Or why am I standing in a museum staring at a canvas that has nothing but a giant slash through it? I don’t get it. Obviously the artist matters but still. I guess that’s art though, it evokes emotions and thoughts even without reason. I bring this up because it always blows my mind when I look through some photo magazines and see about 10 pages of blurry images or pictures of twigs and cats. Again, I don’t get it. Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate personal creativity and vision but sometimes you just can’t help but think, “Huh?”
The subject of whether a photo is good or not often comes up when I’m sorting through images from a shoot. What I usually do after a shoot is go through all the images and rate or delete the ones that are obviously bad (bad exposure, test shots etc). Then with fresh eyes the next day, do the same thing again to narrow down choices for editing. More often than not, when I go back to these images a week or whatever later, some 2 stars might end up being 5 stars and the 5 stars get demoted. So I don’t know, maybe it depends on our mood? State of mind? Expectations? In any case, to each his own.
Well now here’s my collection of ART! I took these at Peter’s wedding while at the dinner table and when the flash went off on one of the photos and half the frame was blocked by someone, my friend Louise looks at the photo and says to me “You’re a really good photographer” in the funniest and most sarcastic tone ever. Lol, still makes me laugh. So we took more artsy magazine worthy photos and hence this post. Not gonna lie, I kind of like the colours but that’s just me. You might be thinking, “what is this crap?” and I would tell you, “if you look closely, it’s a cat building a fort out of twigs.”
